Overview

The Computer Support Staff (CSS) provides support to department faculty, researchers, and staff. CSS provides support for more than 400 computers and users in 9 locations associated with the Department of Surgery. In addition to supporting the Department of Surgery and the Department of Orthopedics, CSS also provides contract services/support to clients in Physical Therapy as well as other smaller groups.

Currently the department runs 23 file servers of various description and purpose to provide the best computing resources to support the Departments of Surgery and Orthopedics mission. The primary file server for all these users maintained a 99.84% uptime during business hours during years 1999-2001, which is almost unprecedented in any environment. During this time our web server maintained a 99.9999% uptime (down 20 minutes in 3 years).

Policies

  • The Department of Surgery does not permit or condone the illegal copying of software. It is not permissible to install unlicensed software on any departmental network or computer. The computer staff will be glad to assist you in purchasing and installing software to meet your needs.

  • The computer support staff will consult with you on computer purchases for both business and personal uses. The Department maintains standards for PCs on our network. This allows us to offer consistent, rapid, high-quality service. Also, we have access to special discounts and pricing on all computer equipment. Thus all PC purchases should be made in conjunction with the computer staff. For personal purchases, we will be glad to advise you regarding your needs and problems. TIme constraints do not permit us to work on home machines.

  • Every network user is provided with a secure, personal storage area on the network, which is backed up regularly to tape. Because of space limitations, only work related data is to be stored. No applications (executables) are to be installed in this area. Appropriate applications can be installed on your local hard drive.

  • Every network user is to have their own unique network account and password. Group accounts are discouraged for a variety of reasons. Please meet with a representative of computer support to discuss your access needs. Your network password is confidential and not to be given out to anyone.

  • Federal legislation requires that data with patient information be secured and backed up. Secure network storage is available for workgroups and laboratories as needed. This space will be backed up nightly and access limited to specified users.
