Heart-Lung Transplantation

UW Health offers a specialized heart-lung transplant program for patients with irreversible heart and lung disease. Combined heart-lung transplants, though rare, can extend the lives of people who would otherwise not survive end-stage cardiopulmonary disease.

Our experienced transplant physicians evaluate prospective patients on a case-by-case basis. Once a patient has been fully evaluated and is recommended for transplant, he or she is followed by a multidisciplinary team of surgeons, physicians, transplant coordinators, and other health professionals throughout the entire transplant process.

We have performed more than a dozen combined heart-lung transplants since our program began in 1988. Our program is the only one in the United States that is approved to perform heart-lung transplantation for the Veterans Administration.
