Lung Transplantation

Introduction

UW Health offers a comprehensive lung transplant program for patients with irreversible lung disease. We perform single lung and bilateral lung transplants according to the needs of individual patients. We also perform heart-lung transplants, though these are very rare.

Since the program began in 1988, over 300 patients have been offered a second chance of life through lung transplantation. With a one-year survival rate now at 87%, our program is one of the most successful lung transplant programs in the country.

Our program is also the only one in the United States that is approved to perform lung transplantation for the Veterans Administration.

Proof of our program's effectiveness can be seen in statistics comparing the performance of UW Health with all other transplant programs in the United States.

Our team's experience, commitment, and success have made UW Health's lung transplant program a national and international leader.
