Dr. Tracey Weigel Receives 2009 Geriatric Patient Care Award at 45th Annual Society of Throacic Surgery Surgeons Meeting

Dr. Tracey Weigel and her UW colleagues Andrea Schnell, Nancy Steinhauer, Traci Bretl, Jens C. Eickhoff and Noelle LoConte received the 2009 Geriatric Patient Care Award at the 45th Annual Society of Thoracic Surgeons Meeting in San Francisco in January. The award is presented to the authors of the best abstract on the topic of aging and cardiothoracic surgery and was given for their abstract entitled “Preoperative Thoracic Oncogeriatric Assessment for Patients With Thoracic Malignancies.” The study explored preoperative Thoracic Onco Geriatric Assessments (TOGA) for older patients with thoracic malignancies and determined that there was a positive trend that combined MNA, GDS, IADL, and BFI scores to predict postoperative events. They concluded that TOGA is a concise, physician-friendly tool that may enhance geriatric patient care and facilitate quality improvement, as well as enable geriatric patients and their physicians to make informed treatment choices.
