Clinical Specialties

Dr. Weigel is certified by the American Board of Surgery and by the American Board of Thoracic Surgery, and has completed a Fellowship in Surgical Oncology. She specializes in surgical treatment of thoracic malignancies (esophageal, lung, thymic, and mesothelioma) including advanced thoracoscopic and laparoscopic lung and esophageal surgeries. Dr. Weigel is Co-Director of the Multi-Disciplinary Lung and Esophageal Cancer Clinics at the University of Wisconsin Comprehensive Cancer Center. Her practice also includes minimally invasive surgeries for hyperhidrosis (endoscopic thoracic sympathectomy, or ETS) and myasthenia gravis (thoracoscopic thymectomy).

Research Interests

Dr. Weigel conducts research at the University of Wisconsin Comprehensive Cancer Center focused on early detection and minimally invasive surgical resection of lung and esophageal cancers. She is an investigator in several NIH-funded research studies conducted through the American College of Surgery Onocolgy Group (ACOSOG) and Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group (ECOG). Her research interests include: the efficacy of fluouescence endoscopic surveillance for dysplasia and cancer in Barrett's esophagus and early lung cancer; laparoscopic resection of esophageal cancer; computed tomography (CT) screening for lung cancer; and preoperative chemo and radiation therapies for advanced lung and esophageal cancers.
