Medical Coding Specialist Dept of Surgery

Responsibilities:

The Medical Coding Specialist is responsible for review of medical records, notes, dictation and other related documentation to ensure the accurate and timely submission of charges for professional services provided by physicians and other providers. The Medical Coding Specialist resolves coding issues identified in the Epic charge review work queues. This position provides ongoing feedback to physicians and other providers and assists, as requested, in educational in-services to ensure that pertinent requirements for coding are met. The Medical Coding Specialist may perform research on inquiries from physicians or other staff members as required.

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Medical Coding Specialist program required (1 year of direct medical coding experience
    will be considered in lieu of educational requirement)
  • Certification as CPC, RHIT, RHIA, or CCS-P required
  • Experience interpreting medical records; electronic and paper
  • Experience interacting with physicians regarding coding requirements is preferred
  • Extensive knowledge of CPT/HCPCS and ICD-9/ICD-10 coding
  • Knowledge of Epic, preferred
  • Knowledge of spreadsheet and word processing software
  • Extensive knowledge of Anatomy and Physiology
  • Knowledge of medical documentation requirements
  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Effective communication skills, both written and verbal

Schedule:

This is a 40 hour per week position. Hours are Monday - Friday 8:00 am - 5:00 pm.
