Letter from the Chairman
Spring has sprung in Madison, which is especially evident in the UW sports world. The UW Badger men’s basketball team made it to the Sweet Sixteen in the NCAA playoffs, and we are celebrating the news of Coach Tony Granato’s return to the Badger hockey arena.
The Division of Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery is also full of exciting news and changes. Here are some of the highlights:
The Division of Otolaryngology—Head & Neck Surgery wishes Dr. Karen Cooper and her husband, Dr. Cliff Cho, the best of luck with their upcoming move to the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor this summer. As many of you know, Karen was a highly ranked medical student from Vanderbilt and an exemplary resident in our program, and she has become a valued faculty member in our Division. She is a person of great integrity, compassion, and common sense and will be missed by her patients, their families, and her colleagues. Good luck, Karen and Cliff!
Dr. Joseph Roche will be joining us as a faculty member August 1, 2016. He is currently an Otology, Neurotology & Lateral Skull Base Surgery Fellow at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. He completed his residency at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and Medical School at the Medical College of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. We are excited to welcome Joe and his family!
The local, national, and international news scenes have been buzzing over the latest findings from Nathan Welham, PhD, associate professor, and his associate scientist Changying Ling, which could lead to treatments for patients with voice impairments due to damaged vocal cords. The story UW-Madison scientists grow functional vocal cord tissue in the lab appeared on the front page of the Wisconsin State Journal and numerous national and international news outlets. It was one of the biggest news stories ever out of UW-Madison.
Many of our faculty and residents participated in the free Oral, Head & Neck Cancer screening, held on Friday, April 22, in conjunction with our partners in the UW Carbone Cancer Center.
Manometry Summer School
On June 2-3, 2016, the Voice & Swallow team will be hosting its 2nd Manometry Summer School program. This is a hands-on training workshop for speech language pathologists on HRM instruction and practice, allowing participants an opportunity to acquire the knowledge and skill required.
June 10, 2016, is our Annual Resident Research Day and Chief’s Dinner. This year’s keynote speaker will be Dr. Paul Flint from Oregon Health & Science University. The graduating class year includes Drs. Christopher Britt, Jacob Feldman, and Swapna Musunuru. Dr. Britt will be pursuing a Head and Neck Oncology Fellowship at Johns Hopkins University, Dr. Musunuru will be joining our faculty here at UW and at the Middleton VA hospital, and Dr. Feldman is pursuing a facial plastics fellowship.
