Message from the Program Director

Dear Prospective Resident and Colleague,

Welcome to the University of Wisconsin-Madison’s Division of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. Our division continues in an exciting expansion involving our clinical, educational, teaching, and research missions. We have now completely transitioned to an Integrated Plastic Surgery Residency Program and have been approved (May 2008) for expansion to three residents per year. There are two residency tracks: one is a six-year track with straight clinical training and the second track is seven years, providing a one-year opportunity between the PGY-3 and PGY-4 year to pursue research or a clinical fellowship. We have broadened the educational opportunities in the program, involving all of the plastic surgeons in the region, with a central commitment to resident and student education.

As part of the ongoing development of our academic division, we have made a substantial investment of resources to develop a PhD directed research program. We now have one full-time plastic surgery research resident currently supported by a NIH T-32 Training Grant. We continue to expand our faculty and recruit individuals with diverse fellowship training. When I arrived in 1999, there were four full-time faculty members. Now we are nine and given our clinical growth we have two new faculty members arriving in Summer 2010. Finally, we have substantial overseas commitments for teaching and clinical care in various developing countries, including a sister residency program in Nicaragua.

We are quite proud of our division and its accomplishments. Our residents are second to none, the educational program is mature and tested, and the environment is superb for learning and families. We work hard, have fun, and provide the foundation of plastic surgery experience that allows each and every resident to pursue their professional dream. We look forward to getting to know you.

Sincerely,
