Message from the Chairman

Dr. Lund

Dennis P. Lund, MD

Associate Professor of Surgery

Chairman, Division of General Surgery

Surgeon-in-Chief, UW Children's Hospital

Greetings.

Thank you for your interest in the General Surgery Residency Program at the University of Wisconsin. It is my privilege to invite prospective residents to consider joining us at this fine institution.

We offer a broad-based residency program, encompassing the entire spectrum of general surgical specialties, including pediatric surgery, hepatobiliary and gastrointestinal surgery, endocrine surgery, vascular surgery, surgical oncology, trauma-burn-critical care, and transplantation. You will learn a wide range of surgical techniques -- both traditional and minimally invasive. Throughout your training, your work in the operating room will be just one part of the continuum of excellent patient care that we emphasize.

Our faculty consists of excellent general surgeons dedicated to providing you with superior training. Through our partnerships with the Veterans Administration Hospital and a private hospital in the city of Madison, you will meet an expanded array of outstanding surgeons-mentors, all of whom will make a significant contribution to your postgraduate surgical education.

You will also have the opportunity to do research during your residency -- a two-year research experience is available between the second and third clinical year. We offer an excellent support staff to foster residents' research efforts.

The General Surgery Residency Program provides you with top-notch skills and experience, no matter what path you choose to take after your residency is complete. Over the past 15 years, one-third of our graduates have gone into private surgical practice, one-third into full-time academia, and one-third into additional fellowship/academic training programs.

Your residency here at the University of Wisconsin will be as vigorous and as sophisticated as any offered anywhere in the country. Combined with the beauty of Wisconsin and our pride in this vital institution, your education here will be second to none. Join us for the opportunity of a lifetime. On Wisconsin!

Sincerely,

Dennis P. Lund, MD
