Conference Highlights

The conference schedule is intended to provide you with a Socratic approach to your medical education. Conferences are presented in part by the residents and in part by faculty or visiting professors.

In Professor's Hour, you and your colleagues will present unknown cases to the chairman, Dr. Rikkers. He will then take you through the case to develop a diagnosis and prescribe treatment.

The Evidence Based Medicine conference is held once a month and centers on a clinical paper and methodological article. Each month a junior resident presents and discusses a clinical case pertaining to the articles. A senior resident prepares an analysis of the articles, including study design, results, conclusions, and the article’s implications on modern surgical practice. An expert in the field discusses the basic science that supports clinical decisions. This is followed by a formal question and answer session.

Surgical Grand Rounds is presented by senior residents, surgical faculty, nonsurgical faculty, or 5-8 times a year by visiting professors.

The Indications Conference is attended by all general surgery residents and faculty. This conference is an opportunity to discuss various views on the indications and approaches to the various surgical procedures residents have done each week.

Morbidity and Mortality Conference is a key teaching conference during which all complications and deaths are presented by senior residents and discussed by faculty and residents.
