Lack of Safety Belts among EMS - January 13th, 2004

Survey Shows Most Providers Do Not Wear Belts In An Ambulance

November 1, 2003

The October question of the month survey reveals that 66% of EMS providers
claim they rarely or never wear seat belts when they are riding in the
patient compartment of an ambulance. Only 7% state they always buckle up
while 8% say they often do. A total of 305 individuals took part in the
Internet survey by recording their response sometime during the month. The
Wisconsin EMS Association uses the question of the month as an un-scientific
survey tool to gauge a ball-park response to a different question every
month. Even considering a wide margin for error, the survey seems to
indicate overwhelmingly that EMS providers do not wear seat belts in an
ambulance even though they are likely to buckle up in their personal
vehicles. Coincidently, the Wisconsin Department of Transportation reports
that "Current usage for seat belts in Wisconsin is around 66%."- the same percentage of EMS providers who claim not to wear them in the ambulance.
