General Information

Traumatic injuries are the leading cause of death and disability among people between the ages of one and 44. Injury is the fourth leading cause of death overall and is recognized as a major public health problem across the nation. med flightWisconsin recognizes the need to improve trauma care, injury prevention, and the importance of implementing an inclusive, comprehensive trauma care system that integrates all components of trauma care. What does this mean to the pre-hospital provider? RTACs will serve as the backbone of the Statewide Trauma Plan. The RTAC will identify trauma care related needs and develop regional and local strategies in order to address specific needs. The RTAC is designed to improve and expedite the care of the severely injured patient. Each region will have its own set of guidelines to match the resources of each trauma care facility to the needs of injured patients.

As a result, every patient can receive optimal care from initial recognition of the injury through return to the community. The Dane County area is fortunate to have access to many hospitals, with UW as the Level One Trauma center, helicopter trasport access and many EMS services with advanced skills. The RTAC will only strengthen the relationships between each of these services as well as expedite recognition and care of the severely injured trauma patient.
