Medical Education Partnership Initiative

An Investment in Medical Education

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and the Fogarty International Center launched a new initiative to invest in and strengthen medical education with the Medical Education Partnership Initiative, a 5-year, $130 million federal program aimed at enhancing medical in 12 sub-Saharan African countries. The UW in collaboration with Addis Ababa University and three other Ethiopian medical schools are the primary grant collaborators in Ethiopia. From the U.S., partner institutions include the UW, University of California-San Diego, Johns Hopkins University, and Emory University.


Project goals are to:

  • Improve the medical education system by increasing the number of physicians and quality of training
  • Build human capacity and retention qualified academic medical faculty
