The 9th Annual UW School of Medicine and Public Health’s Medical Student Research Forum was held on Tuesday, January 18. Dr. Herbert Chen gave the Shapiro Guest Lecture at the forum. His presentation “The Legacy of Ivar Sandstrom and the Impact of UW Medical Students,” related the discovery of the parathyroid organ by a medical student in 1880 to the impact that students can make in medical research and discussed the important role that participation in a research experience plays in helping students discern their careers.

The forum featured oral and poster presentations from the 17 students who were mentored and participated in research projects in the Department of Surgery last summer. The Department of Surgery remains a leader in mentoring medical students in research. Student research is supported cumulatively through two NIH-funded training grants, as well as the UWSMPH’s Shapiro Program. Thank you to our faculty mentors who help us maintain an excellent program and congratulations to our students who presented their research.
