At the Top

In the recently released Blue Ridge Institute for Medical Research 2010 Ranking Tables of NIH Funding, the Department of Surgery at the University of Wisconsin was ranked Number 13 with $6.17M in funding, compared to Number 24 in 2009 with $4.2M in funding. Kudos to all of the hard working PI’s and their highly productive research teams. Remarkable researchers. Remarkable results.

Clinical

Drs. John Hoch and Girma Tefera will repair a patient’s aortic aneurysm with a minimally invasive repair technique in a live surgery available to view via real time web cast on Thursday, April 28, at 5 p.m.

Research

Drs. Xiaofang Xu, Victoria Browning, and Jon Odorico’s abstract, “Generation of pancreas-spheres from human embryonic stem cells,” has been selected for the BEST ABSTRACT ORAL SESSION at the 13th World Congress of the International Pancreas and Islet Transplant Association, to be held in June in Prague, the Czech Republic.

Service

At the business meeting of the Association of Academic Chairmen of Plastic Surgery, Michael Bentz MD was elected to the Executive Committee as Member at Large. Dr. Bentz was also elected to the Executive Committee as Treasurer of the American Association of Plastic Surgeons. This is in addition to his election as Vice Chairman, American Board of Plastic Surgery for 2011-2012

Upcoming Events

On Tuesday, May 3, faculty, residents and staff are invited to attend the Annual Layton F. Rikkers Education Retreat in the Ameche Room at the Inntowner Hotel from 5 to 7:45 pm. The featured speaker is Ajit Sachdeva, MD, Director, Division of Education of the American College of Surgeons. He will speak on “Advances in Simulation-based Surgical Education and Training: Innovations, Challenges and Opportunities.” A Pre-meeting Simulation Workshop will be held from 3 to 5 pm in the Bascom Room.

On Wednesday, May 18, Resident Research Day will be held at the Madison Museum of Contemporary Art in the first floor auditorium. Please drop by throughout the day to hear our general surgery residents report their studies.
