K. Craig Kent was elected as a new Director of the American Board of Surgery for a term beginning July 1, 2013 and ending June 30, 2019. The American Board of Surgery is an independent, nonprofit organization founded in 1937 to certify individuals who have met a defined standard of education, training and knowledge in the field of surgery. The ABS offers board certification in general surgery, vascular surgery, pediatric surgery, surgical critical care, surgery of the hand, hospice and palliative medicine, and complex general surgical oncology. The ABS is composed of a board of directors representing the leading surgical organizations in the U.S. Dr. Kent was nominated and selected as the representative from the American Surgical Association.
The Department was notified that at the January meeting of the Biological Sciences Review Committee, Carla Pugh was appointed as Associate Professor with tenure and Tim McCulloch was promoted to Associate Professor with tenure. Both votes were unanimous. Dr. McCulloch will request a subsequent promotion to Professor. Congratulations!
Sharon Weber performed the first Hyperthermic Intraperitoneal Chemotheraphy (HIPEC) procedure at UW on a patient. Following cytoreductive surgery, a heated solution containing chemotherapy is circulated in the peritoneal cavity for up to 2 hours to kill any remaining cancer cells.
A patient wrote to Dr. Chen to say how pleased she was with Dr. Greenberg as her Bariatric Surgeon. “He approached me first as a person and then as a patient…I was delighted with my rapid postoperative recovery.”
Michelle Ciucci and Greg Kennedy mentored students in the Integrated Biological Sciences Summer Research Program (IBS-SRP). IBS-SRP is a 10-week program that offers high potential students from targeted minority groups, disadvantaged socioeconomic backgrounds or small colleges the opportunity to experience biological research at a large university. They participated through the Institute for Cross-College Biology Education.
Hans Sollinger has been named Consulting Editor for the American Journal of Transplantation (AJT). AJT is the leading journal in transplantation and its citation index is second among surgical journals behind Annals of Surgery.
New Society of University Surgeons committee appointments include Rebecca Sippel and Dan Ostlie to Publications, Suresh Agarwal to Membership and Carla Pugh as Representative to the Council of Academic Societies-AAMC.
