Girma Tefera, MD, will join the American College of Surgeons (ACS) Division of Member Services as the new Medical Director of the Operation Giving Back (OGB) Program. In his new half-time position, Dr. Tefera will develop and lead ACS Clinical Congress programs in global surgery, coordinate the College response to disasters worldwide, develop new programs and opportunities for surgeon volunteers, communicate the work of OGB, and increase College participation and recognition among other similar global organizations. This is a great honor and a reflection of the wonderful work Dr. Tefera has done with the University of Wisconsin-Ethiopia Global Health Twinning Partnership.


The American Surgical Association (ASA) recently notified Irene Lou, MD, a postdoctoral trainee in Dr. Herbert Chen’s lab, that her paper “How Well Does Renal Transplantation Cure Hyperparathyroidism?” was accepted for presentation at the 135th ASA Annual Meeting in San Diego, California, April 23-25.


Carla Pugh, MD, PhD, was recently named to the TEDMED Editorial Advisory Board. This group of science-minded individuals from a variety of backgrounds, including academics, private industry, and science journalism, will help plan the annual TEDMED stage program, which aims to highlight innovations in health and medicine.

Lee Wilke, MD, was named to Susan G. Komen South Central Wisconsin Affiliate Board of Directors.

Sam Gubbels, MD, has been a member of the Wisconsin State Board of Hearing and Speech for six years, and he was recently elected to serve a one-year appointment as chair.


The Cardiothoracic Department Fund received a $2,500 gift from a grateful patient. This is his second donation to the fund, his way of saying “thank you” to physicians at the UW for their work.
