Lakita Maulson, working in Dr. Carla Pugh‘s Simulation and Engineering for Surgical Education (SEnSE) lab, was awarded a Diversity Supplement Grant by the NIH to fund "Patients’ Perceptions of the Clinical Breast Examination as a Tool for Patient Education." The results of this study will be compared with previous work from the lab’s R01 grant — “Validation of Sensorized Breast Models for High Stakes Testing” — which has identified potential performance standards for the clinical breast examination. The study will be conducted within Ms. Maulson’s rural, reservation hometown of Lac du Flambeau, Wisconsin, so that she may gain the skills necessary to work within tribal communities much like her own as a future physician.
The Thoracic Surgery Foundation for Research and Education (TSFRE) awarded Jennifer Philip, MD, PGY-2, the Nina Star Braunwald Research Fellowship Award, which supports women residents working in a cardiac surgical clinic or laboratory research program. This $60,000 award supports two years of research funding. Congratulations, Jenny!
The Surgery Clinical Research Experience for High School Students is undergoing an expansion for Summer 2016. The program is entering its 5th year and funding from the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation has supported five underrepresented students per year from the PEOPLE program for 6-week summer research internships. This summer the department is sponsoring two additional students from Madison-area schools with the goal of expanding our partnerships with area schools and youth organizations. This will position the program to request additional support in its competitive renewal. DDCF has also invited us to incorporate an undergrad research experience for past students into the renewal application. We look forward to the ongoing success of this program.
Michelle Ciucci, PhD, was appointed to a 2-year term on the new Neurobiology Major Program Committee. As a member of this committee Dr. Ciucci will be involved in a number of tasks pertaining to the management and administration of the undergraduate major, including monitoring courses within the major, reviewing new course proposals relevant to the major, interacting with students, and exploring ways to obtain funding for neuroscience-related lab courses.
