Faculty News

A Memorial Resolution for Dr. Charles Yale, long-time faculty member in the Department of Surgery, will be read at the February 7 faculty senate meeting. Take the time to read about this amazing surgeon’s career.

Dr. Jon Gould recently served on the FDA Advisory Panel which looked at expanding indications for gastric banding. Dr. Gould voted in favor of expanding indications noting a vast “treatment gap exists for those people with severe health consequences of obesity and are not candidates for bariatric surgery due to decades-old BMI cut-offs”. The panel voted favorably, 8-2, for expanding the indications that were originally established in a 1991 consensus panel. The expanded coverage could affect nearly 30 M individuals. This was reported in the New York Times Business Section on December 3.

Bo Liu, PhD received her first independent R01 from the NIH. Her project, “Molecular Mechanisms of Abdominal Aortic Aneurysms,” was funded for 4 years. Congratulations to Dr. Liu on this significant accomplishment!

Dr. Liu, in collaboration with Dr. David Lynn in Chemical Engineering, has been awarded a 1 year Graduate School grant for their project “Nanostructured Thin Films for the Localized Delivery of DNA and siRNA to Vascular Tissue: New Approaches to Treatment of Intimal Hyperplasia.” The grant will fund two graduate students to conduct this interdisciplinary project.

Marie Stelzer, MD, General Surgery resident, has the cover artwork and two articles published in December’s edition of Cancer Prevention Research. Congratulations!

Emily Winslow will complete a biological study of resveratrol’s effects on notch-1 signaling in patients with low grade gastrointestinal neuroendocrine tumors and Greg Kennedy with Chris Bradfield will study chronotherapy of colon cancer with funds received through Translational Research Awards from the UW Clinical Cancer Center.
