Tony D’Alessandro, MD, professor of surgery in the Division of Transplantation, was named the first Mark A. Fischer Chair in Transplantation. A specialist in adult and pediatric liver transplants, as well as intestinal transplantation, Dr. D’Alessandro is a highly skilled and respected surgeon and teacher. He is also a tireless advocate for organ donation and advancing transplantation in Wisconsin and around the world. Dr. D’Alessandro arrived at the UW in 1981 as a surgical resident and later completed clinical and research fellowships in transplantation before joining our faculty in 1989. In 2000, Dr. D’Alessandro assumed the executive director position within the UW’s Organ and Tissue Donation service and developed it into one of the most successful programs in the country; today he serves as its medical director. Dr. D’Alessandro also led the UW Liver Transplant program from 2008 to 2016 and served as director of the transplant surgery fellowship program from 2009 to 2015. Dr. D’Alessandro will use his chair to advance the field of organ donation and transplantation. Please join me in congratulating Tony on this well-deserved honor.

Research

The UW Skin Diseases Research Center (SDRC) awarded Angela Gibson, MD, PhD, a one-year, $30,000 grant through its Pilot & Feasibility Studies Program to support her project “Molecular and proteomic signatures of cellular regeneration in burn injury.” Please join me in congratulating Dr. Gibson on her first grant — this is great work!

Patient Comments from Hospital Survey

Aimee Mastrangelo, PA-C (Plastics)
“What could make my visit better? Nothing. The care I received at this clinic should be the standard by which all others are judged. Aimee and Dr. Afifi and all others on their team at UW are exactly what healthcare should be about. They are unhurried, very willing to discuss treatments, and genuinely care about the people they treat. I cannot bestow enough compliments on Aimee and Ahmed — these are plainly, the kind of people that renew faith in human-kind. I consider myself so fortunate to have had my healthcare needs addressed at UW. Bravo. Bravo.”

Maia Braden, MS, CCC-SLP (Peds ENT)
“Maia is competent, kind, considerate and skilled at what she does! We are thankful for her and her help. You are blessed to have her as a team member!”

Girma Tefera, MD (Vascular)
“Dr. Tefera is the best of the best! He is a wonderful doctor and a fine person.”
