Gretchen Schwarze, MD, MPP, recently joined The New England Journal of Medicine to discuss her research on how physicians can use scenario planning to facilitate informed decision-making with patients. She was featured in a podcast interview with their managing editor, which you can download online. This work, “Managing Uncertainty – Harnessing the Power of Scenario Planning,” was also featured in an article on the NEJM’s website, which was written by Dr. Schwarze and 4th year general surgery resident, Lauren Taylor, MD. Amazing achievement. Congratulations!

Research

Brooks Rademacher, MD, has been invited to speak at the European Society of Coloproctology Meeting in Berlin this fall. This invitation was extended after his paper, “In Vivo and In Vitro Efficacy of Dual PI3K/mTOR Inhibition in Novel Murine Models of Anal Cancer,” was named Best Paper at the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons Annual Meeting.

Clinical Innovation

Satoru Osaki, MD, PhD, and John Hoch, MD, recently joined colleagues in the Division of Cardiovascular Medicine for an unusual TAVR procedure, the first complex vascular access performed with cardiology, vascular surgery, anesthesia and cardiac surgery. Our surgeons and the rest of the skilled team rose to the challenge of collaborative decision-making and patient care. The procedure was successfully completed, and the patient states she is “so happy I can finally breathe!” Great work, Dr. Osaki and Dr. Hoch.

Philanthropy

Through a generous gift from a transplant patient and her parents, a new endowed professorship is being created in the Division of Transplantation for Robert Redfield, MD. As the Berkman family investigated transplant programs all over the country, they quickly realized why the UW Transplant Program is ranked 4th in the nation. Dr. Redfield’s compassionate care inspired the Berkmans to help create this million-dollar fund to support transplant research and advancement. Congratulations to Dr. Redfield and the transplant team.

Education

Plastic surgery resident Ruston Sanchez, MD, recently gave a memorable plastic surgery grand rounds, “The History of Cleft Lip Repair,” complimented by his own medical illustrations. Ruston is an accomplished medical illustrator, with his images appearing in manuscripts, book chapters, and journal covers. In medical school at Louisiana State University School of Medicine and here at UW, he also sings and plays guitar in a rock band, while earning kudos on his education success with our UWSMPH students.

Quality Care

A patient recently expressed gratitude for care received from Dr. Charles Heise and Sandra Zastrow. They tearfully stated, “I feel like I won the lottery having them on my care team. I know they care for people like me every day, but this is not part of my every day, and I so appreciate them and their care. My husband and I came to the big city for this treatment and I wasn’t treated like a number.”
