The Department of Surgery and UWHC received official notice from the State of Wisconsin Department of Health Services that their grant proposal to fund the development of a new community general surgery residency track was approved. The grant award is $573,000 over three years. It was one of six grants DHS awarded this year to develop new GME programs focused on training primary care physicians to serve rural communities. This grant complements an earlier grant the General Surgery residency program received for $350,000 over three years from Wisconsin Rural Physician Residency Assistance Program (WRPRAP). The first candidates will be interviewed in fall 2014, with the first resident starting in June 2016. Bob McDonald, PhD, deserves kudos for writing the successful grant application.
Four Department of Surgery faculty members were recently notified of unanimous endorsements for their promotions. Rebecca Sippel, MD, received a track transfer to Associate Professor with tenure, and Shahab Akhter, MD, was appointed professor with tenure. Ken Meredith, MD, and Chuck Leys, MD, were appointed to Associate Professor (CHS). These are well-deserved appointments – congratulations to all. Special thanks to Chelsea Anderson who oversaw a very busy and successful year for faculty promotions.
The UW Department of Emergency Medicine awarded Vanessa Nomellini, MD, a General Surgery PGY-4, with an EM Trauma Award, given to one surgical resident each year to recognize his or her partnership with the Emergency Medicine team of residents, faculty and staff. Congratulations, Vanessa!
Badger Hockey is big news in Madison, so when the UW Burn Center and UW Athletic Department announced its upcoming Blake Geoffrion Hockey Classic fundraiser, the local media listened. Wisconsin State Journal sports writer Andy Baggot wrote an article detailing the event, which takes place June 27 and will benefit the UW Health Burn Center. In the article, Baggot quotes Department of Surgery Professor Lee Faucher, MD, director of the Burn Center and organizer of the event. Less than 700 tickets remain for this event and can be obtained through www.uwbadgers.com.
