This week the Department of Surgery welcomes 35 medical students who are being mentored by Department of Surgery and Urology faculty and scientists this summer. Students are engaged in basic science, clinical, health services and global health research projects. Student stipends are supported by two NIH training grants as well as the UWSMPH Shapiro Program. Thanks to Kristi Herritz for coordinating the program, and Joan Subach, Jim Burnett, and Collin Brown for locating and preparing offices and computers.

Jocelyn Burke, MD was elected as the UW House Staff Association president for FY14. In that role, she will attend monthly GMEOC and Medical Board meetings where she will represent the house staff at large. Congratulations on this major honor.

The Department of Surgery has been home to the editorial office for Annals of Surgery, the world’s most highly referenced surgery journal, under the leadership of Dr. Bing Rikkers as Editor-in-Chief, from 1996 to 2011 and remained in the department under the leadership of the current Editor-in-Chief Dr. Keith Lillemoe, until May 31 of this year. As of June 2013 the editorial team is relocating to a new office in Washington. Outstanding editor Pam Nevar and her team will be missed.

Clinical Kudos

A patient wrote to the UWHC “Share your story” online and stated “Dear Dr. De Oliveira, It’s been many years since I last wrote, but I wanted to let you know that you were in our thoughts (as always!) as we celebrated the 8th birthday of our daughter, Annabelle, recently. The surgery you and your team performed when she was just 3 months old changed our lives forever, giving us the gift of this beautiful, joyful girl. She’s enjoyed eight healthy, happy years and has been our delight every minute. We wanted to share a couple photos, along with our never-ending gratitude.”

On April 16, 2013, Karen Burch (Physician Liaison) and Becky Sippel, MD visited 45 providers at Watertown, Ixonia, Johnson Creek, Beaver Dam, and Fort Atkinson. Dr. Sippel is now the record holder for the most outreach done in one day. The providers were very happy about the outreach services provided by our endocrine team.

Heidi Busse, MS was notified that her proposal, “Nutrition, Environment and Food Systems in Ethiopia: Youth Leadership as the Foundation for Creating Sustainable Rural Livelihoods,” was selected for funding at the level of $119,918 for the period of July 1, 2013 to June 30, 2016, through the Ira and Ineva Reilly Baldwin Wisconsin Idea Endowment. Heidi will lead a group of students on a two week experience in Ethiopia.

The American Association of Endocrine Surgeons started a formal accreditation process for endocrine surgery fellowships this year. UW was notified that their fellowship was accredited for a 3 year cycle. Copyright © 2016 The Board of Regents of the University of Wisconsin System
