Dai Yamanouchi, MD, PhD, learned that his American Heart Association grant titled “Osteoclastogenic Macrophage Activation” was funded for two years at $70,000 per year. The work will begin on July 1, 2017. Ting Zhou, PhD, a postdoctoral fellow in Bo Liu, PhD’s lab, also received AHA funding for her fellowship. Congratulations to these successful researchers in Vascular Surgery.

Education

The Division of Otolaryngology held its third annual Manometry Summer School last week in the Voice & Swallow Clinics. Our speech language pathologists led this hands-on training workshop, the only one of its kind in the country. UW has some of the nation’s leading experts in the use of high-resolution manometry, a procedure that measures esophagus pressure and generates detailed esophageal topography data. Speech pathologists from around the country, including University of Nevada-Reno School of Medicine, Boston Medical Center, Central Michigan University, and Memorial Hermann Southwest (Texas), traveled to Madison to learn from our providers. Kudos to the planning committee, composed of Susan Thibeault, PhD, CCC-SLP, Molly Knigge, MS, CCC-SLP, BCS-S, and Nichole Rauch, along with Timothy McCulloch, MD, Otolaryngology chairman, and the rest of our trainers.

Research

Ian Wolf, a student advisee of Hau Le, MD, has been awarded a 2017-18 Hilldale Undergraduate/Faculty Research Fellowship. This award will support their work building a bioreactor that applies fluctuating forces similar to intrathoracic pressures that occur during fetal breathing to study the effects of mechanical forces on fetal lung development.

Honors

Anne-Lise D’Angelo, MD, and Michael Nabozny, MD, were selected by peers and faculty as the 2017-18 administrative chief residents for General Surgery. In this role, they will serve as peer motivators and will represent residents in administrative decisions.
