UW Health has been recognized by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) as one of eight private and public healthcare systems in the U.S. to be HA-VTE Prevention Challenge Champions. Healthcare-associated venous thromboembolism (HA-VTE) is a blood clot occurring as a result of hospitalization, surgery, or other healthcare treatment or procedure, and it affects approximately 450,000 Americans each year. The HHS/CDC’s 2015 HA-VTE Prevention Challenge identified hospitals and hospital systems that have implemented effective and innovative VTE prevention strategies. UW Health saw a significant reduction in post-operative events between 2008 and 2010 as a result of VTE prevention efforts. We appreciate the lifesaving work done by everyone in the department to prevent deadly blood clots.
