In a recent news article examining the practice of using 30-day mortality as a measure of surgical success, vascular surgeon and medical ethicist Gretchen Schwarze, MD, weighed in on the discussion as one of several quoted experts. “A Surgery Standard Under Fire” appeared in the March 3, 2015, edition of The New York Times.


Elizabeth Bingman, MS, Department of Surgery’s Medical Student Program Administrator, was selected by the UWSMPH class of 2015 as winner of the inaugural Outstanding Clerkship Administrator Award. Each year, fourth-year medical students nominate exemplary faculty, residents, and staff to recognize those who have had a great impact on the class over the course of their four years in medical school. Elizabeth will receive the award at the Match Day ceremony on Friday, March 20. Congratulations on being recognized for your leadership, hard work and patience.


Heather Neuman, MD, MS, received an $18,000 grant from the UW Carbone Cancer Center Cancer Control Scientific Program to support her pilot proposal “Implementation of a web-based decision aid supporting patient decision-making for breast cancer surgery.”


Department faculty published 24 articles in February 2015, in journals ranging from NEJM to Annals of Surgery and J Immunotherapy to J of the American College of Surgeons. Six of seven divisions were represented in the total with 11 in General Surgery, four in ENT, three in Vascular and 2 each in Cardiothoraic, Pediatric and Plastic Surgery.
