At the Top

Dixon Kaufman, MD, has been invited to be a standing member of the NIH’s Allergy, Immunology, and Transplantation Research Committee (AITC). This committee’s contributions assist the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) in identifying the most meritorious biomedical research in the immunology field. Dr. Kaufman will serve a six-year term on the Scientific Review Group. Congratulations to Dr. Kaufman on this prestigious honor.

Surgery Education

As part of the department’s new investment in education, several new education leadership roles have been filled. These include: Chip Foley, MD, – Vice Chair of Education; Jacob Greenberg, MD, – General Surgery Residency Program Director; Carla Pugh, MD, PhD, – Vice Chair for Innovation and Entrepreneurship; and Girma Tefera, MD – Vice Chair for Global Surgery. The department will also make targeted hires to administratively lead and support these programs. The ultimate goal of this effort is to become the best surgical education department in the country.

Career Development

Angela Ingraham, MD, MS, has been accepted into the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) Early Career Women Faculty Leadership Development Seminar. This seminar provides women faculty at the early career level with knowledge and skills required to navigate the academic medicine landscape with leadership in mind. Congratulations, Dr. Ingraham!

Groundbreaking G-POEM

Amber Shada, MD, recently performed her first gastric peroral endoscopic pyloromyotomy (G-POEM) at The American Center, and the procedure went very well. The G-POEM procedure shows promise in treating gastroparesis, a chronic, disabling disease. Only a small number of facilities currently perform this procedure regularly, and thanks to Dr. Shada’s success, the UW will join them. Congratulations, Dr. Shada!
