On May 10, 2010, Dr. Girma Tefera and the UW Center for Global Health hosted the symposium International Perspectives on Emergency Medicine: the Ethiopian EMS Initiative. The symposium featured presentations by Milliard Derbew, MD (VP for College of Medical Sciences at Addis Ababa University), Aklilu Azazh, MD (Director of Emergency Medicine, Addis Ababa University/Black Lion Hospital), Dean Robert Golden, MD (UW School of Medicine and Public Health), Azita Hamedani, MD (Interim Chair, UW Division of EM) and others.
The symposium described the Ethiopian EMS Project, which was started by Dr. Tefera (PI). In August 2009, Dr. Tefera and the UW-Center for Global Health received a 3-year CDC/PEPFAR Twinning Center grant from the American International Health Alliance to strengthen the capacity of Emergency Medical Services and support the prevention, care and treatment of HIV/AIDS in Ethiopia. This grant “twinned” the UW with Addis Ababa University/Black Lion Teaching Hospital and People 2 People, an international Diaspora NGO. In Year 1, the initiative has created an Emergency Medicine fellowship hosted by the UW to train Ethiopian physicians and nurses, launched Ethiopia’s first EM Training Center, and established a series of technical trainings taught by UW and international EM professionals.
Dr. Hani Hennein, pediatric cardiothoracic surgeon, and Dr. Jon Matsumura, Chief of the Division of Vascular Surgery, were both promoted from Visiting Professor CHS to Professor CHS. This completes a year of many promotions in the Department. Thanks go to Kelsey Anderson and her team (Deb Gugel, Ann Hardie and Anna Pankratz) who worked diligently with faculty members to prepare and submit 16 requests for promotion in 2010.
Two General Surgery residents applying for competitive pediatric surgical fellowships each matched to their first choices: Dr. Emily Durkin is going to Boston Children’s and Dr. Anna Ibele is going to Kosair Children’s Hospital in Louisville. Congratulations!
Congratulations to Dr. Bruce Harms for successfully completing the Executive MBA Program at the University of Wisconsin School of Business.
