Several newspapers across Wisconsin ran a Mother’s Day-themed article last week that featured Rebecca Sippel, MD, and the mother of one of her pediatric patients. Dr. Sippel treated Beth Anne Rekowski’s son for Graves’ disease, and since then Ms. Rekowski has recruited Dr. Sippel to help her in a growing advocacy network that educates parents about childhood Graves’ disease. Nathan Welham, PhD, CCC-SLP, was promoted to Associate Professor with tenure at the May meeting of the Biological Sciences Divisional Committee. A. Neil Salyapongse, MD, was promoted to Clinical Professor at the SMPH Promotions Committee meeting. Congratulations to both of these superstar performers!
Two members of Dr. Will Burlingham’s lab were recently recognized for their work. Graduate student Matthew Brown was awarded the UW Institute for Clinical and Translational Research (ICTR) TL1 traineeship, while undergraduate student Ian Norman won the UW’s Welton Honors Summer Sophomore Research Apprenticeship Grant.
The Department of Surgery’s Cliff Cho, MD, and Noelle LoConte, MD, of the UWSMPH Department of Medicine, will serve as co-leaders of UW Carbone Cancer Center’s GI DOWG (disease-oriented working group), which focuses on experimental therapeutics for gastrointestinal cancers.
Effective June 1, Peter Nichol, MD, will serve as Medical Director for the UW Health Pediatric Specialty Clinic – Fox Valley, which currently offers 13 subspecialties and 26 providers. Dr. Nichol has worked in the Appleton clinic for several years, providing pediatric general surgery services.
The General Surgery Clinic at 1 S. Park is a 2014 UW Health Patient Experience Clinic Team Award winner. One of four clinics that received this award, the patients in the General Surgery clinic noted the staff to be friendly, helpful and quick to inform patients of waits and delays. Congratulations to Roland Vega, MD, clinic medical director, Donnette Kelly, clinic manager, and the entire clinic staff!
Sue Sanford‑Ring, VP of Quality and Patient Safety, and the Discharge Collaborative recognized Suresh Agarwal Jr., MD, as a Patient Experience Champion for his work providing patient-centered care around the discharge process. The week of May 5, 100% of Dr. Agarwal’s patients had confirmed discharge dates and times, and he was recognized by a multi‑disciplinary team on F4/4 as providing great communication with his patients relating to the discharge process.
