Under the mentorship of David Melnick, MD, MPH, the following three surgery residents, Jennifer Philip, MD, Joseph Imbus, MD, and Juan Danobeitia, MD, PhD, won The Best Quality Improvement Project that Aligns with UW Health Patient Safety Goals at the UW Health Resident and Student Quality Improvement Symposium last week for their work titled “Characterizing Opioid Requirements and Surgeon Prescribing Practices after Outpatient General Surgery”. Jennifer Philip recognized Dr. Melnick for the large amount of time and effort he invested in supporting the three general surgery residents through this project and making sure they were set up to be successful. The project highlighted how many pain pills patients actually (or don’t actually) need after surgery.
Lisa Werning, Director of the Office of Clinical Research for the Department of Surgery, was recently awarded a UW Academic Professional Development Grant. Lisa will also give a presentation at that meeting titled, “Calculating Exact Effort for Research Staff Conducting Clinical Trials.” Well done, Lisa!
