Journalist David Wahlberg and photographer John Hart joined Division of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery faculty members on their annual trip to Nicaragua. Check out the great work being done by Drs. Mike Bentz, David Dibbell, Delora Mount and Carolyn Rogers, along with anesthesiologists Deb Rusy, Ben Walker and Luke Stoltzfus, and surgical tech, Lynn Russ.
The second multicenter clinical trial of the StrataGraft® skin substitute will be initiated at UW this week. Dr. Lee Faucher will direct the study to assess prolonged exposure to StrataGraft skin tissue compared to autografting in skin defects due to thermal burns. The study will be performed at UW-Madison and Wake Forest University.
Ciara Leydon was awarded $10,000 from the American Laryngological Association for her work titled “Epithelial Barrier Function Following Vocal Fold Injury.” This is Dr. Leydon’s second extramurally funded grant since joining the Division of Otolaryngology in June 2011.
Nathan Welham received a 9th percentile on his R01 competitive renewal application, "Characterization and Treatment of the Scarred Vocal Fold.” With total costs $3,560,756 this would be Dr. Welham’s second active R01.
Dr. Herb Chen was elected as a Governor-At-Large to the American College of Surgeons Board of Governors. His appointment is through 2014.
Dr. Carly Seaberg was selected for a highly competitive 2012 – 2013 Society of University Surgeons-Resident Scholar Award. She will receive $30,000 to study “Optimization of Resident Training in the Operating Room” with mentors Dr. Chip Foley and Dr. Caprice Greenberg. The Society gives only one award each year so major congratulations to Dr. Seaberg.
The Department of Surgery is renovating conference rooms G5/320 and K4/745. Each room will be outfitted with a new audiovisual system that will allow for simplified Webinars, presentation capture and enhanced projection of images. Remodeling in K4/745 will begin on December 16, 2011 and will be completed by Tuesday, February 7. Remodeling in G5/320 will start on Monday, January 23 and be completed by Wednesday, February 22, 2012. Joan Subach is coordinating work with Plant Engineering and AVI.
