Last year the Department of Surgery received an incredible $17.5 million to create 11 new named chairs and professorships. These gifts were made possible through generous donations from our supporters and matching funds from John and Tashia Morgridge, who gifted the University of Wisconsin-Madison $125 million in one-to-one matching funds for any donor who made a gift to endow a professorship, a chair, or a distinguished chair. Over the next few weeks, we will announce these gifts and their recipients. One of the gifts our department received was from Beloit businesswoman Diane Hendricks, whose $1.75 million donation will support breast cancer research and treatment options. Lee Wilke, MD, professor of surgery and director of the UW Health Breast Center, has been named the Hendricks Chair in Breast Cancer Research, and John Siebert, MD, has been named the Hendricks Chair in Reconstructive Surgery Research.

Honors & Awards

Michelle Ciucci, PhD, Assistant Professor in Communication Sciences and Disorders with a Joint Departmental appointment in Surgery, received word that the Biological Sciences Divisional Committee voted to recommend her promotion to tenure to the Dean and the Regents. Dr. Ciucci performs her laboratory funded research (NIH and Michael J. Fox Foundation) within the Department of Surgery so we are especially proud of her accomplishments.

Amy Liepert, MD, was notified by the American College of Surgeons’ Health Policy and Advocacy Group that the Wisconsin Surgical Society, under her leadership of the Policy, Planning & Government Relations Committee, was awarded a $5,000 grant for 2016. The grant will fund surgical participation in the Wisconsin lobby day called Doctor Day at the state capitol scheduled February 10, 2016. This event is organized in conjunction with the Wisconsin Medical Society. If you are interested in participating, please contact Dr. Liepert.

Philanthropy

The Cars Curing Kids fund for pediatric research received a $1,000 donation from Capitol Bank, which celebrated 20 years in business last month with its “20 Years, 20 Causes, 20 Days” campaign. In honor of this milestone, the bank donated $1,000 to 20 different community organizations each weekday in October. We were honored to be chosen for this generous donation.
