On Friday, October 10, over 100 people celebrated the creation of the Charles N. Ford Endowed Professorship in Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery, at an event honoring Dr. Ford, at the new Edgewater Hotel. The event followed a half-day CME program and golf outing for surgeons, researchers and other health care professionals. Many former faculty, residents, and patients came to honor Dr. Charles “Chuck” Ford, who is universally recognized as a beloved surgeon, educator and visionary in the Department of Surgery at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health. To the delight of attendees, internationally renowned Ben Sidran and his group played during the cocktail hour. Thanks to Delight Hensler and Russ Austin for planning this wonderful weekend.
Michael Garren, MD, a specialist in bariatric surgery and the medical director of the UW Health Medical and Surgical Weight Management Program, was featured in a news story about a patient who recovered from heart failure after bariatric surgery. “Doctors at UW Health give veteran second chance at life” aired on WISC-TV Channel 3 on September 22.
The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel recently ran an article detailing the future of health apps and how they can be used to monitor patients and reduce post-treatment complications. One of the examples highlighted in the story was the work Dr. K. Craig Kent and his team are doing to develop a smartphone app that would assist in early detection of wound complications and surgical site infections. “Epic helps Apple develop HealthKit, its new platform for health apps” was published on October 4.
Ken Meredith, MD, and Carla Pugh, MD, PhD, were featured in a news story about robotic surgery at UW Health. In the piece Dr. Meredith discussed the expanding use of surgical robots while Dr. Pugh talked about her research into training surgeons on robotic systems. “Robotics help train master surgeons at UW Hospital” aired on WKOW Channel 27 on October 7.
Carla Pugh, MD, PhD, was selected to serve on the Board of Directors for the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) Research and Education Foundation (REF). During her service on the board, the ABMS REF will create and implement a new strategic vision.
