Will Burlingham, PhD, received 5 years of funding for a P01 grant, “TH17 Autoimmunity to Type V Collagen in Heart and Lung Transplant” based at Purdue under David Wilkes. His project “Collagen a1(v) Epitope-Specific TH17 Cells in Heart and Lung Transplantation” was funded along with one other project in Pathology and histology and animal cores here at UW for a total of $740,000 direct annual costs.
Emily Winslow, MD, was awarded a UW ICTR Clinical and Type 1 Translational Research Pilot grant for her project “Detection of Liver Metastases with Gd-EOB-DTPA Enhanced MRI.” Pilot projects provide $50,000 for 12 months of research support. Dr. Winslow has entered the Masters Degree Graduate Program in Clinical Investigation (GPCI), housed in the Institute for Clinical and Translational Research.
Josh Mezrich, MD’s KL2 Award was renewed for a third year, June 1st, 2011 through May 31st, 2012. Under the mentorship of Chris Bradfield, PhD and Bill Sugden, PhD in Oncology, he is studying the role of the aryl hydrocarbon receptor, the receptor for the toxin dioxin, in causing immunosuppression, thymic involution, and generation of T Regulatory Cells. This receptor may be a novel target for modulation in efforts to generate tolerance in solid organ transplantation.
Summer Hanson, MD, Plastic Surgery resident, was honored as the recipient of the 2010 Resident Research Grant-in-Aid Award from the American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery Foundation for her work titled “Adipose derived MSC’s with a hydrogel scaffold for soft tissue augmentation.”
Becky Sippel, MD reports that the first American Association of Endocrine Surgeons Fellowship match was successful. Despite being a new fellowship, they successfully matched their first choice, Dr. David Schneider, who is currently a chief resident at Loyola University in Chicago.
