At the Top

In the October 3, 2011 issue of The New Yorker, surgeon Atul Gawande, a regular writer for that magazine, describes his experience of being coached on surgical performance. He references cancer surgeon and former colleague, Caprice Greenberg, who “has become a pioneer in using video in the operating room.” Dr. Greenberg is initiating this work at UW collaborating with Doug Wiegmann, Associate Professor in the School of Engineering. New Leadership Appointments

Chuck Heise, MD, has been appointed to the new position of Director of Surgical Operations for UWHC. Dr. Heise will partner with Barb Pankratz, the Director of Surgical Nursing Services and George Saviello, the Director of Anesthesia Perioperative Services to assure operational quality and efficiency in the operating room. In this role he will participate in the budgeting process, strategic planning as well as day to day scheduling and case prioritization. He will be the direct physician interface between surgeons and other perioperative stakeholders. We welcome Chuck to this important new role.

Diane Heatley, MD has been appointed Interim Medical Director of the American Family Children’s Hospital. Dr. Heatley will provide clinical leadership and collaborate with hospital and nursing leadership to further grow and develop clinical services at the American Family Children’s Hospital. Her focus will include safety, quality, efficiency and patient- and family-centered care. Moreover, she will lead efforts to promote referring physician relationships and collaboration between medical staff. Dr. Heatley will also assist in AFCH’s capital fundraising campaign focused on building a 6th floor as well as a new pediatric cardiac angiography suite. We look forward to partnering with Dr. Heatley in these endeavors.

Sharon Weber, MD, has been appointed Medical Director of Surgical Oncology at UW Hospital. This is a new position where she will be responsible for managing and growing surgical oncology programs for the University of Wisconsin Carbone Cancer Center/UW Hospital and Clinics. As UW expands its outreach to multiple new locations throughout the state and region, Sharon will lead strategic initiatives that focus around the broad range of cancer surgery provided by UW Health. We look forward to partnering with Sharon in this new and exciting role.
