The Wisconsin Society of Otolaryngology held its annual meeting October 1-2, 2016, in Lake Geneva. Otolaryngologists from around the state presented, as well as residents from UW-Madison and MCW Milwaukee. Members of the UW Division of Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery were active participants throughout the event. Joe Roche, MD, assistant professor of surgery, presented “The Extended Middle Fossa Approach for Treatment of Skull Base Lesions.” Two of our residents brought home awards for their presentations at the meeting: Matthew Hoffman, MD, PhD, PGY-2, was awarded the top basic science award for his presentation “Evaluation of Type II Thyroplasty on Phonatory Physiology in an Excised Canine Larynx Model,” and Marc Rohrbach, MD, PGY-4, received the award for top clinical presentation for “Human Papillomavirus Vaccine.” At the business meeting, Seth Dailey, MD, associate professor of surgery, was re-elected secretary-treasurer of the organization.
John Scarborough, MD, associate professor in the Division of Trauma and Acute Care Surgery, was named Vice Chair for Quality in the Department of Surgery. Dr. Scarborough joined the Department as an Associate Professor, hailing from Duke University where he received his MD, completed a general surgery residency and a critical care and abdominal transplant fellowship, and was on faculty for 8 years. He has published several articles on quality improvement, most recently in the Journal of the American College of Surgeons in April 2016.
Forty articles written by Department of Surgery faculty members and researchers were reported in our September Medline search.
Jacob Greenberg, MD, EdM, was awarded the Department of Medicine’s “Extra Mile Award” on September 29, 2016. The award recognizes a UW Health faculty member outside of the DOM who has made significant contributions to the DOM. Congratulations!
A friend of a patient who was recently admitted to the TLC following an accident stopped by patient relations to sing Dr. Angela Gibson’s and Heather Templin’s (APP in the TLC) praises. She had wonderful words to share about the care her friend received. Her friend was treated with the most “superlative, compassionate, and skillful care” while in the TLC. She also added that “everything was really great and care was incredible.” Thank you!
Elizabeth Sisk, MD (Otolaryngology):
“Dr. Sisk was really kind, caring, and knowledgeable!”
Takushi Kohmoto, MD, PhD (Cardiothoracic):
“There is nothing my provider could do to make my future visits any better. Dr. Kohmoto was thorough in explaining things. I appreciated the care and concern I received from all the staff that saw me, all my questions were answered to my satisfaction.”
Evie Carchman, MD (Colorectal Surgery):
“Dr. Carchman always listens and makes sure I understand the answers. Very patient and concerned. Best doctor ever!”
