Department faculty, residents, alumni, and administration presented, moderated, taught skills courses, led committee meetings, and gathered to celebrate the University of Wisconsin Department of Surgery at the 2017 American College of Surgeons Clinical Congress. Highlights included induction of five Surgery faculty members into the college: Drs. Paul DiMusto, Angela Gibson, Angie Ingraham, Hau Le, and Susan Pitt. At the annual alumni dinner, attended by 75 guests, we welcomed new chair, Rebecca Minter, MD, to the Department and the Layton Rikkers Alumni Society and presented the first Forward Award to alumnus, Erik Johnson, MD (2010), who practices at Aurora Baycare in Green Bay where he coordinates all UW 3rd and 4th year medical student rotations.
Congratulations to Luke Funk, MD, Jacob Greenberg, MD, EdM, and Amber Shada, MD, for leading a successful training in hernia repair. Surgeons, trainees, and residents from UW and across the country attended the event, which included a hands-on lab. Thank you to everyone who made this training a success.
Congratulations to transplant fellow Clark Kensinger, MD, who received the Resident Award for Exemplary Teaching at the American College of Surgeons 2017 Clinical Congress last week.
Josh Mezrich, MD, and Sharon Weber, MD, were co-authors on “Transplantation Versus Resection for Hilar Cholangiocarcinoma: An Argument for Shifting Treatment Paradigms for Resectable Disease,” which was published in Annals of Surgery on October 23rd.
Congratulations to James Maloney, MD, whose patient care and donor stewardship have resulted in a $75,000 gift from the Arenas family to support his outcomes research. The family was inspired by the excellent care Dr. Maloney gave and continues to give one of their family members. Thank you to Dr. Maloney for always making yourself available to families and giving all our patients the highest level of care.
