The Department of Surgery is delighted to announce two of its surgeons have been formally named to leadership positions within the medical school and UW Health after serving in interim roles. Charles Leys, MD, associate professor of surgery, will serve as chief of the Division of Pediatric Surgery within the UW Department of Surgery, and Petros Anagnostopoulos, MD, MBA, will serve as surgeon in chief at American Family Children’s Hospital.

Dr. Leys is recognized as one of the top minimally invasive pediatric surgeons in the United States. In addition to his leadership role within the department, Dr. Leys also serves as surgical director of the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, director of Pediatric Minimally Invasive Surgery, and director of Surgical Critical Care for AFCH.

Dr. Anagnostopoulos has served as section chief of Pediatric Cardiac Surgery within the Department of Surgery since joining the UW in 2011. He is also co-medical director of the children’s heart program at AFCH. Together with a talented, multidisciplinary team of specialists, he has built a pediatric heart surgery program which has grown to require a second surgeon. He recently graduated from the UW Executive MBA program where he gave the commencement address.

Carla Pugh, MD, PhD, trauma surgery and the department’s vice chair of education and patient safety, was elected to the board of directors of Surgical Data Science, an international workshop that aims to bring together researchers working on diverse topics in surgical data science. We are excited to have a faculty member involved in this emerging scientific discipline, which examines improving the safety, quality, effectiveness, and efficiency of surgical care by means of data acquisition, modeling, and analysis.

The Association of Academic Surgical Administrators recently held elections to its 2016/2017 Board of Directors. Teri Keeler, department CFO, will serve as president, and Shaun Hernandez, program director – strategic initiatives, will serve as secretary. Congratulations to you both!

Delight Hensler, program manager in the Division of Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery, was designated the Wisconsin representative to the Association of Otolaryngology Administrators, the only association dedicated to otolaryngology practice management. Great work, Delight!
