A recent analysis of impact factors amongst surgical peer-reviewed journals has put Annals of Surgery in the top spot. Annals of Surgery is the world’s most highly referenced surgery journal.

A journal’s impact factors is a measure reflecting the average number of citations of published articles in science journals. It demonstrates the importance of a journal within its field.

UW Department of Surgery faculty have played an integral role with Annals over the years. From 1997-2011, Professor Emeritus and former Chairman of the Department of Surgery, Layton F Rikkers, MD, served as Editor-in-Chief. Dr. Rikkers is currently Emeritus Editor-in-Chief. Herbert Chen, MD, Chief of General Surgery, is an Associate Editor and K. Craig Kent, MD, Chairman of the Department of Surgery, is a member of the journal’s editorial board.
