Dr. Michael Garren, clinical professor with the UW Department of Surgery and medical director of the UW Health Medical and Surgical Weight Management Program, recently discussed the benefits of bariatric surgery and the characteristics of an ideal candidate on Wisconsin Public Radio’s Larry Mieller Show.

According to Dr. Garren, bariatric surgery is not a quick fix for weight loss for the majority of people who are overweight or obese. Instead, it’s an option for people with clinically severe obesity, or those who are more than 100 pounds over their ideal body weight. Other factors, such as a patient’s success with previous weight loss attempts and motivation to lose weight, also play into a surgeon’s decision to proceed with bariatric surgery.
