Gregory D Kennedy, MD, PhD, Assistant Professor of Surgery, is one of a few surgeons in the United States who performs single incision laparoscopic surgery for colon cancer. Laparoscopic colon resection is becoming more common as a means to treat colon cancer. Making a few small incisions to see inside the abdomen, surgeons can take a less-invasive approach to the operation rather than the traditionally invasive open colectomy. As a result, laparoscopic resection can reduce patient recovery time.

Dr. Kennedy and his team of medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, gastroenterologists, and GI radiologists decided colon cancer patient Roxanne Shain was the perfect candidate for an even less-invasive procedure, the single incision laparoscopic resection.
