The online health news website HealthCanal.com recently ran an article about Dr. Josh Mezrich’s work in making kidney donation easier and safer for living donors. This is an important goal given the median survival rate for living donor kidneys is 18 to 20 years, about twice the rate for deceased donor kidneys.

As the article explains, one way Dr. Mezrich is making kidney donation less invasive for live donors is through single-port nephrectomies, a procedure in which surgeons remove kidneys from living donors through their belly buttons. The surgery leaves little scarring and the recovery time is similar to a laparoscopic procedure.
