After a national search, James Maloney, MD, associate professor in the Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery, was named chief of surgery at the William S. Middleton Memorial Veterans Hospital in Madison, Wisconsin. In his new role, Dr. Maloney will provide administrative and clinical leadership over all surgical services at the VA, maintain a VAH-based research program, and train and mentor medical students and surgical residents.

Dr. Maloney has been an active member of the VA surgical team since joining the UW in 2006 and has been dedicated to improving veteran medical care locally and nationally. He has been a clinical champion for the VA national cancer care collaborative, as well as a member of the National VAH Transplant Advisory Council and a board member of the Association of VA Surgeons Foundation.

The Madison VAH serves 130,000 veterans living in 15 counties in south-central Wisconsin and in five counties in northwestern Illinois. It is affiliated with the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health and is physically connected to University Hospital.
