Patients in Wisconsin experience shorter wait times on organ wait lists than the national average, due in part to high registered organ donor rates in Wisconsin and throughout the Midwest. But the national group that sets organ transplant policy in the U.S. is considering a change to the allocation system that would send organs to areas where people are most in need. Dixon Kaufman, MD, PhD, chairman of the Division of Transplantation within the UW Department of Surgery, believes the system could be improved by strengthening organ donation registries across the nation.

“Potential changes in organ transplant policy could be longer wait times in Wisconsin” aired on WDJT CBS 58 in Milwaukee on July 24. Copyright © 2017 The Board of Regents of the University of Wisconsin System
