To celebrate its 50th anniversary, the UW Health Transplant and UW Organ and Tissue Donation program hosted two events on July 29-30. The events’ theme “Hope, meet Gratitude” matched that of the program’s year of activities and special marketing initiatives. More than 600 guests attended the Friday evening gala, which featured a look back on the program’s leaders, milestones and successes, then transitioned to sharing the team’s vision for the next 50 years. Saturday’s reunion welcomed almost 900 patients, donor families, staff and guests for a casual picnic, program and parade of people who shared their personal stories of hope and gratitude. A 60-page book titled 50 Years of Courage was distributed to all gala guests and is available for purchase online or in the Transplant Clinic.
Since the first organ transplant on March 16, 1966, UW Health surgeons have performed more than 13,000 transplants, making ours one of the largest and most successful programs in the world. Visit the Hope, meet Gratitude website to learn more about the anniversary, read stories of Hope and Gratitude, and view a spectacular timeline detailing the history of transplantation at UW Health.
