The State of Wisconsin Department of Health Services (DHS) has awarded the UW Department of Surgery and the University of Wisconsin Hospital and Clinics $573,000 over three years to fund the development of a new community general surgery residency track within the General Surgery residency program. The grant was one of six the DHS awarded to health organizations to develop new programs focused on training primary care physicians to serve rural communities.

The UW Department of Surgery will be interviewing its first candidates in the fall of 2014, with the first community general surgery resident starting his or her training June 2016.
