Becky Broering’s mother needed a kidney transplant but neither Becky nor her siblings were a match. At approximately the same time Carol Werndli, Becky’s mother, was enduring dialysis treatments, the University of Wisconsin Division of Transplantation was being added to the National Kidney Registry. This new collaboration of pairing transplant recipients with donors allowed Becky and her mother to participate in a nation-wide chain of 32 transplants. Carol received a kidney from Pittsburgh and Becky donated hers to someone in San Francisco. Carol and Becky’s operations were performed by faculty members of the UW Division of Transplantation.
