  • syndromes involving the face
    • Pierre Robin syndrome (cleft palate and extremely small mandible)
    • Treacher Collins syndrome (cleft palate, eye abnormalities, small mandible)

  • syndromes involving the head
    • Craniosynostosis
    • Apert’s syndrome
    • Crouzon syndrome
    • Pfeiffer syndrome
    • Hypertelorism

Members of the group include, pediatric craniofacial-plastic surgeons, pediatric ENT surgeons, audiologists, pediatric social worker, geneticist, specialized speech and language pathologists, pediatric dentist, and orthodontist.

Each team member focuses on individual aspects of problems with craniofacial birth defects. For example, the pediatric craniofacial surgeon focuses on surgical correction of the birth defect. The ENT surgeon and audiologists focus on preservation of hearing (as often children are at risk for fluid and infections.) The speech pathologists provide complex testing and therapy if the child experiences difficulty with speaking. The social worker focuses on adjustment of the child in the school/social settings and provides support to families. The dentist and orthodontist work together providing global dental healthcare, and specific treatment and recommendations for children whose teeth are affected by the craniofacial abnormality.

In summary, the entire team works to provide comprehensive proactive care of children with facial birth defects from birth until adulthood. In addition, if ultrasound diagnosis of cleft or other craniofacial abnormality is noted during pregnancy, we provide prenatal consultation and support to expectant parents.
