Dr. Wade Bushman, Urology, named Vice-Chair of Research in the Department of Surgery

It is with pleasure that I announce the appointment of Dr. Wade Bushman
to the position of Vice-Chair of Research in the Department of Surgery.
Dr. Bushman will provide leadership and oversight for all departmental research
activities. He will establish strategic direction regarding the planning and guidance
for the development and implementation of research initiatives within the
Department. In addition, he will identify and develop opportunities for translational
research that will connect the Department's clinical programs to basic science
laboratories within the Medical School and University. He will also pursue the
development of clinical, public health, and industrial research programs.
As Vice-Chair of Research, Dr. Bushman will serve as a member of the Department's
Administrative Council.

Dr. Bushman joined the Department of Surgery in 2002 as an Associate Professor
in the Division of Urology. Prior to this, he was an Associate Professor in the
Department of Urology for 10 years at Northwestern University Medical School in
Chicago. He completed his residency at the University of Virginia.

Dr. Bushman's research interests include clinical research in bladder and pelvic
floor dysfunction and basic research in prostate development and prostate cancer.
He is currently the Principal Investigator on three active grants, including an R01
and a DOD that study sonic hedgehog signaling, and an NIH center grant that
studies prostate cancer as it relates to aging and environmental factors.

In his clinical practice, Dr. Bushman specializes in urology, pelvic floor and bladder
dysfunction, neurourology, and urodynamics. Since 2003, he has been the director
of the UW Bladder Clinic, which is part of the Multidisciplinary Pelvic Floor Center
that provides coordinated evaluation and treatment of complex pelvic floor problems.

Dr. Bushman has a Bachelor of Arts degree from Amherst College, a Doctorate of
Philosophy (Biology) from Brown University, and a Doctorate of Medicine from
the University of Chicago.
