Project Summary:

Chronic inflammation is a key factor in prostate cancer pathogenesis and inflammatory mediators promote tumor growth. We present startling evidence that so-called ‘inflammatory’ mediators are expressed during prostate development and induce substantial epithelial proliferation. We postulate that these mediators function in inflammation as part of a programmed response that reiterates their role in development. This proposal addresses the specific hypothesis that inflammatory mediators stimulate epithelial progenitor cell proliferation during prostate development and prostatic inflammation. We expect to produce novel insights into epithelial proliferation in response to inflammation and provide rationale for specific interventions to prevent cancer and slow tumor progression.
